Australia: A Global Leader in Tobacco Control

Australia has long been a pioneer in tobacco control policies, consistently implementing measures to reduce smoking rates and improve public health. From the introduction of plain packaging laws in 2012 to the continued increases in tobacco excise, the Australian Government has taken a firm stance against smoking. These policies have led to a decline in smoking prevalence, although this rate has slowed in recent years.

Stricter Controls on Nicotine Vaping Products

In addition to tobacco regulations, the Australian Government has also introduced stringent measures for nicotine vaping products. As of recent years, both nicotine and non-nicotine vaping products are classified as Schedule 3 or 4 medicines for smoking cessation or managing a nicotine dependency. This means they can only be legally sold through Australian pharmacies such as Tabuu’s partner pharmacy. Furthermore, pharmacies are only permitted to sell a limited range of flavours, including menthol, mint, and tobacco limiting the appeal of these products to youth or nonsmokers as these products are not risk free.

More Changes to Tobacco Regulations Are Coming

Further tightening of tobacco regulations is on the horizon, with new rules set to take effect in 2025. Here are the key dates and changes:

1st April 2025

  • Manufacturers will no longer be able to sell or distribute products that do not comply with the updated regulations.
  • Retailers can still continue selling non-compliant products until July 2025.

1st July 2025

  • Retailers will be banned from selling any tobacco products that do not meet the new regulations.

Key Changes in Tobacco Regulations

Menthol Cigarette and Capsule Ban

  • Menthol and capsule cigarettes will be completely banned in Australia.

Flavour and Ingredient Restrictions

  • Stricter ingredient regulations will alter the composition of cigarettes, particularly roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco, which has traditionally contained added flavours such as rum and wine.

Pack Size Standardization

  • Only two pack sizes will be available: 20-cigarette packs for tailor-made cigarettes and 30g pouches for roll-your-own tobacco.

Cigarette Stick Health Warning

  • Every individual cigarette will now be required to have printed health warnings to further deter smoking.
